Given that Donald Trump’s political rise has both appealed and contributed to a fear of immigrants in the United States, it should come as no surprise that he has the full support of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. The white supremacist warned white Americans that voting for Trump’s rivals is a "treason to your heritage."
A poll released earlier this week showed that 20% of those who support Trump disagree with the 1865 ending of slavery following the US Civil War. There are reasons to doubt the accuracy of the poll. For one, the slavery question appeared in the middle of a lengthy, 103-question survey and was framed as an executive order issue. The same poll found that 5% of black people were against the Emancipation Proclamation, and it seems highly unlikely that 2 million black Americans are pro-slavery. Additionally, slavery was not made illegal at the end of the civil war, it was a primary cause of the war, and the Emancipation Proclamation, which made it official, had been handed down in 1863.
